After an early finish up Mount Cabot with a group headed by Ed Hawkins, I had time for another small hike before heading back to Maine. Last Saturday I hit Mount Randolph. Today, I will hit the next peak over, Mount Crescent.

Looks like I will be breaking trail.

I quickly reached the junction with Cook Path but continued up Mt Crescent Trail

I crossed a snowmobile trail. (Listed on my map as Jimtown Logging Road)

I wish I could have followed the packed trail, but I continued breaking trail on Mount Crescent trail. The trail steepened after this. |

More trail to break

From here there are two ways to the summit. I guess I'll do the 1.2 mile loop.
But do I go clockwise or counter clockwise. I used my foolproof method that I use on all my import decisions: Eenie, meenie, minnie, moe.

I decided on clockwise.

The trail really got steep after this, and the snow was a lot deeper.
It was slow going but I finally reached the south viewpoint

For a cloudy day, I got a pretty good view into the valley.

The tops of Mounts Madison and Adams were cloudy.

I walked a couple tenths of a mile along the top of the mountain before coming to a scenic lookout with views to the northwest.

A minute later I was on the wooded summit. I'm not quite sure if the trail goes to the exact top. I bushwacked around a couple minutes using my GPS until I found what I thought was the highest point. Once my GPS read 3255' I figured I was on the top. My map lists the summit at 3251'. Several feet of snow makes up the 4 foot difference. I continued down the other side of the mountain which was very steep. I completed the loop and headed back down the way I came. Breaking trail through the fresh snow took me 3 hours roundtrip.
